Talat Noi

Old riverside neighbourhood of shophouses, murals and hidden cafés.
About Talat Noi
Talat Noi is an old riverside neighborhood in Samphanthawong, just south of Chinatown along Charoen Krung Road. It was Bangkok's first port, where Chinese, Portuguese and other immigrants landed. Its lanes mix wooden shophouses, Chinese shrines, a Gothic Catholic church and busy car-parts workshops, with murals painted on the walls since the 2016 Buk Ruk festival.
You wander the alleys looking for street art, visit the 200-year-old So Heng Tai Mansion (about 50 baht, or free with a cafe purchase), see Holy Rosary Church and the riverside Rong Kuak Shrine, and stop at cafes such as Mother Roaster or Hong Sieng Kong. Walking around is free, and coffee is the main cost.
It is a good date for couples who like slow walks, photos and coffee breaks. Wear comfortable shoes, go from 8 to 11am or from 4 to 6pm to avoid the heat, and finish by the river at sunset. Remember that people live and work here, so keep your voice down.
