Phra Athit Road

Old town road near Khao San with bars, cafés and Phra Sumen Fort.
About Phra Athit Road
Phra Athit Road is a 770-metre riverside street in Bangkok's old town, in the Banglamphu area just a short walk from Khao San Road via Soi Rambuttri. It runs along the Chao Phraya River and is lined with old shophouses that mix Chinese and European styles. At its north end the whitewashed Phra Sumen Fort, built in 1783, stands beside Santichaiprakan Park, a small green space with views of the Rama VIII Bridge.
You come here to wander, eat and drink rather than tick off one sight. The fort and park are free, and the Baan Chao Phraya gallery shows Thai contemporary art at no charge. Food is cheap: noodle shops such as Khun Deng Guay Jub Yuan and Roti Mataba serve simple dishes for well under 100 baht, while bars like Jazz Happens have inexpensive drinks and live music at night. Guides put cocktails at roughly 180 to 320 baht.
It feels calmer and more local than Khao San Road, with students, artists and riverside views, so it suits a relaxed, low-budget date. Arrive in the late afternoon, catch the sunset over the river from Santichaiprakan Park, have dinner along the road, then finish with live jazz after 9 or 10 pm. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable for walking.
Why it works for a date
- Relaxed alternative to Khao San Road
- Sunset river views from Santichaiprakan Park
- Cheap, varied food
- Bohemian live music bars
Good to be aware of
- Busy traffic, take care crossing
- Motorbikes sometimes use the sidewalks
- Street itself is less pleasant than the riverside walkway
