Charoen Krung Road

Bangkok's oldest paved road, now full of galleries and cafés.
About Charoen Krung Road
Charoen Krung Road was Bangkok's first road built with modern methods. It went up between 1862 and 1864 under King Mongkut, opened on 16 March 1864, and was first called New Road. It runs about 8.6 km beside the Chao Phraya River, from the old city through Chinatown and Bang Rak down to Bang Kho Laem. Along the way you pass old shophouses, colonial-era trading buildings, mosques and new galleries. Chinese, Persian, European and Thai-Muslim heritage all sit side by side.
The stretch around Bang Rak is now promoted as the Charoenkrung Creative District. There is TCDC in the Grand Postal Building, the restored wartime sheds of Warehouse 30, ATT 19 and River City Bangkok for art and antiques, and murals on Soi 28, 30 and 32. Food ranges from cheap old-timers to high-end dining. Prachak Roasted Duck has been open since 1909, Jok Prince serves rice porridge, and Samlor and Charmgang are Michelin-listed. Most galleries are free to walk into.
This is a good street for a slow date: walk between galleries, stop for coffee, then have dinner or a riverside drink. Sources do not name a best time. Late afternoon into evening lets you see the galleries while they are open and then move on to dinner or a bar. The pinned point in Bang Kho Laem sits near the southern hotels, such as Chatrium Riverside at Soi 70.
Why it works for a date
- Dense mix of heritage buildings and new galleries
- Warehouse 30 praised as a unique retail and gallery space
- Long-running food institutions like Prachak Roasted Duck
- Plenty of riverside rooftop bars for the evening
Good to be aware of
- The road is long, so pick one stretch rather than walking all of it
- Busy traffic and narrow pavements in older sections
- Some residents worry new development is pushing out old communities
