Song Wat Road

Old trading street near Chinatown, now a café and gallery strip.
About Song Wat Road
Song Wat Road is a 1.2 km street in Samphanthawong. It runs parallel to Yaowarat Road in Chinatown, along the Chao Phraya River. King Chulalongkorn drew its layout in 1892 after a fire. For decades it was a rice and spice trading street, lined with old shophouses and warehouses. It went quiet after a new container port opened in the 1950s, then came back to life from around 2016 with street art and new cafes.
Today old spice sellers and century-old food vendors share the street with specialty coffee and matcha shops. You'll find Terroir.BKK, % Arabica, Local Boys Coffee, Mother Roaster, TAY and CÉRÉMONIALE Matcha Atelier. Classic food stops include Urai Braised Goose, Gu Long Bao buns, Nai Yong duck noodles and Michelin Bib Gourmand Lim Lao Ngow fishball noodles. Sights include ROA's elephant murals, Wat Pathum Khongkha and the Luang Kocha Itsahak Mosque. Walking is free, and most cafes are moderately priced.
It suits an easy café-hopping date that mixes history and food. In 2023 Time Out named it one of the world's coolest neighbourhoods. The guide suggests a weekday morning from about 10 am, because the popular food vendors sell out by noon. Allow 2 to 3 hours. You can end with cocktails at Barbon, a rooftop bar that overlooks the river.
Why it works for a date
- Old vendors and new cafes side by side
- Strong specialty coffee scene
- Large street art murals, including ROA's elephants
- Riverside views from several cafes and bars
Good to be aware of
- Popular food stalls sell out by noon
- Go on a weekday for the full experience
