Bang Krachao

Bangkok's green lung: a river-bend of orchards, canals and cycling paths.
About Bang Krachao
Bang Krachao, also spelled Bang Kachao, is a large loop of land wrapped by a bend of the Chao Phraya in Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan, just across the river from Khlong Toei. It is nicknamed Bangkok's green lung and 'pig stomach' for its shape. Instead of towers you find orchards, mangroves, canals, villages and narrow elevated paths, with few buildings taller than the trees.
The usual plan is to take a 5-minute ferry, rent a bike and ride a loop of roughly 14-15 km on lanes and raised walkways. Stops include Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park, temples, canal-side cafes and, on weekends, Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market. There is no entry fee. Expect about 5-20 THB for the ferry and 30-100 THB for a bike.
It makes a good half-day or full-day date for couples who like being outdoors: the ferry ride, cycling together and a cafe or market lunch. Start early to beat the heat, and bring sunscreen, repellent and small cash. In the rainy season (June to October) pack rain gear.
