Suan Luang Rama IX

Bangkok's largest park, with themed gardens and a lake.
About Suan Luang Rama IX
Suan Luang Rama IX is Bangkok's largest public park, about 500 rai (80 hectares) in Prawet district in the east of the city. It opened in 1987 to mark King Bhumibol's 60th birthday. The park is laid out around a large lake and mixes botanical collections with themed gardens, including Japanese, Chinese, English and Thai gardens, shaded lawns and bridges. It feels green, open and quiet compared with central Bangkok.
You can walk or cycle the paths, rent a paddle boat on the lake, have a picnic under the trees and visit the gold-spired Ratchamangkhala Pavilion, which holds an exhibition honouring King Rama IX. There are orchid and palm collections, a koi pond in the Japanese garden, and cafes and food stalls near the gates. It is cheap: entry is a small fee of 10 to 20 baht depending on the source, and paddle boats were listed at about 40 baht per hour.
It suits a relaxed, outdoorsy date with a picnic, a boat ride and slow walks between gardens. Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon when it is cooler and the light is soft. December is the high point, with the annual flower festival and cooler weather, though it gets crowded then.
