Central Post Office

About Central Post Office
The Central Post Office, also called the Grand Postal Building, stands on Charoen Krung Road in Bang Rak, near the river and the Si Phraya pier. It opened on 24 June 1940 on the old British Legation site. Architects Sarot Sukkhayang and Mew Aphaiwong designed it in a mix of Art Deco and International Style. Its heavy block facade and large Garuda sculptures make it one of the most striking buildings in the old town.
Since 2017 the building has housed TCDC, a design centre with free public areas, rotating exhibitions, a maker space and a large design library. A Resource Center day pass costs about 100 baht. A post office branch still runs on site. Time Out says visitors can go up to the rooftop for free and look out over Charoen Krung. Most visitors spend one to two hours here.
It works well as a slow, low-cost date: look at an exhibition, browse design books together, then walk the Charoen Krung creative district for coffee or dinner. Reviewers say the building looks best lit up at night, so a late-afternoon visit that runs into early evening is ideal. TCDC is closed on Mondays.
Why it works for a date
- Striking 1940 Art Deco facade
- Beautiful when lit up at night
- Free entry and a free rooftop
- Regular exhibitions and events
Good to be aware of
- Exhibitions vary, so some visits feel thin
- Best combined with the wider riverside area
- No photos inside the Resource Center room
Don't miss
