Ko Kret

Small island in the Chao Phraya known for Mon pottery and snacks.
About Ko Kret
Ko Kret is a small island in the Chao Phraya River in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, about 30 minutes to an hour and a half north of central Bangkok depending on transport. It is home to a Mon community whose ancestors settled here after the fall of Ayutthaya, and it keeps a slow, village feel with stilt houses, temples, narrow lanes and riverside paths. A loop around the island is about 5 km.
Most visitors take the tiny ferry (a few baht) from behind Wat Sanam Nuea, then walk or rent a bike (roughly 40 to 100 THB). You can watch potters shape the local unglazed red clay, try making a piece yourself (around 200 THB at some workshops), browse the weekend market for Thai sweets and khao chae, and eat tod man nor kala, a local fish cake. Costs stay low.
It suits a relaxed day date away from the city: a boat hop, a slow walk, snacks and a handmade souvenir to take home. Weekends are lively, with the market, cafes and a craft brewery open; weekdays are quiet but many stalls and exhibits are closed. Go in the morning to walk before the heat.
Why it works for a date
- Authentic slow village atmosphere
- Hands-on pottery and local crafts
- Cheap, tasty Mon and Thai snacks
- Mostly local rather than foreign visitors
Good to be aware of
- Long trip from central Bangkok
- Weekend market lanes get crowded and stalls can feel repetitive
- Plastic waste visible along parts of the river
