Wang Lang Market

Busy market by Siriraj, good for Thai snacks.
About Wang Lang Market
Wang Lang Market is a busy daytime market on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya, in Bangkok Noi. It runs about 300 metres along narrow lanes between Siriraj and Prannok Pier, across the river from Tha Phra Chan. Its customers are mostly local students, hospital staff and neighbours. The name means 'rear palace', after a royal palace that stood here in the early Rattanakosin period. Parts of the old palace wall can still be seen.
Stalls sell cheap clothes, snacks and a lot of ready-to-eat food, with a strong southern Thai streak. Guides name a Thai Muslim roti stall with mataba, Aunt Paad's pad kaprao, a shrimp wonton noodle shop and a Trat-style egg noodle shop. At the riverside end, Theatre Residence and Supatra River House serve sit-down Thai meals with river views. Street dishes are budget-priced.
For a date, take the ferry across, snack your way through the lanes, then take your food to the riverside park near Prannok Pier. You could also finish with dinner by the water. One guide gives hours of roughly 7am to 5pm. Weekday mornings are more local, and weekends are busier.
Why it works for a date
- Huge choice of cheap local food
- Real local atmosphere, not a tourist market
- Easy to reach by river ferry
- Good southern Thai and Muslim dishes
Good to be aware of
- Crowded and narrow at lunchtime
- Mostly closed by late afternoon
- Hot, with limited seating
Don't miss
